MENTA 50+

How to learn to take action for perfect mental health and personal well-being in third age.

To be able to remain active and healthy aging are key concepts in our contemporary European society, especially when it comes to personal mental health. An appropriate level of mental health and well-being among people over 50 is a key source of success in the European Union seen as a society and an economy based on culture. The World Health Organization and the European Union through their publication “2012, the European Year for active aging and solidarity between generations” focus on this topic and encourage older people to take an active stance to help keep their own mental health and good quality of life.

Education plays an important role in achieving these goals together with the management of related teaching aids designed for this purpose.

The research carried out  indicates that, even if you can already find certain materials on the subject, these are often outdated, often use a therapeutic approach rather than prevention and also does not offer a soloist perspective, there is a lack originality and updating.

The MENTA project’s aim is to be able to respond to these challenges by offering guidelines and educational materials available on the subject of mental health training for people over 50 and for trainers; all this by increasing the level of awareness of the importance of mental health and personal well-being, providing guidelines on how to promote them, developing innovative teaching materials.

2009-2011“A SENSE OF PLACE: PRESENTING YOUR LOCALITY”

Coordinator: Burton Manor College, Regno Unito
Partners: Università delle LiberEtà del F.V.G., “István Bibó” Folk High School Foundation, Ungheria; Latvian Adult Education Centre (LAEA), Lettonia.

This partnership between four residential learning centres targeted adults who were socially disadvantaged through limited access to education. It addressed a common need to build confidence and self esteem and promoted a spirit of sharing and cultural learning, garnering enthusiasm to engage proactively with those from similar backgrounds in an international context.

Four groups of 16 eligible volunteers, typically over 40 years old, from communities near to each residential partner’s base attended a 4 day Hosting Skills workshop at their respective residential college in November and December 2009. This provided them with skills in presenting to others, helped in finding out about the history, geography and popular culture of each locality.

Subsequently, each national group planned, organized and hosted a 5 day Guest Visit for 8 participants from each of three partners. These four transnational visits took place in May and September 2010, and in April and June 2011. Before each visit, the participating groups  have attended Cultural Awareness Workshops on the places they were about to visit, organized by the local project partners.

At each guest visit, host group members acted as guides and facilitators for their guests, presenting what was of particular interest to them. In a residential setting, friendships were formed and participants shared and learned about three other cultures, their languages and lifestyles.

In July 2011, each partner country hosted a Dissemination Event for their local community, presenting information about the Sense of Place project. A member of every other partner country was invited to each event.
